Updating friends and family on my personal musings and the daily pleasures of my experience parenting two girlies in the Rose City, I mean City of Bridges, I mean Stumptown...oh, whatever...

LAAAAAAAAAAAAZZYYYYYYYYY
It wasn't until this moment, upon writing about it, that I thought of work. It's been a laaazy relaxing morning, picking through the fridge and what would be a bread box if we had one, to scrounge up breakfast, read a little New York magazine and check in here with you.
My shoulders are low, my back doesn't hurt, and I'm considering crawling back into bed fairly soon. I would like nothing more than to spend all day in bed. I suppose I could but the kids would be bored.
But I look forward to a time when I could have just one day (or several) laaazing in bed, reading, perhaps with a breeze coming through the windows, and maybe the sound of rolling waves on the shore. You know that feeling? I ache for it.
Maybe my honey and I will be able to do that sometime before we're 50.
For now, I'll treasure the opportunity to move a little slower, to not be tied to my desk or my email, to not answer the phone every time it rings. Unless, of course, it's you. :-)

I Shall Not Blog About Work
Instead, I shall blog abouot FALL! I loooove fall. It's my favorite time of the year. This is likely because I grew up close enough to the Berkshires in Massachusetts and visited each fall to see the leafy gorgeousness of the colors, smell the crisp air, eat the fresh apples and wear a sweater and jeans in the perfect sunlight.
Fall here in Portland can be like that too. But this morning around 1AM, Fall hit with a vengeance. Wet, driving rain and wind blowing through my curtains forcing me to mop up the wetness with the closest face towel I could find. I had to run through the house and close windows.
But even then, the air smelled so clean, the breeze was fierce and crisp but not cold. I just adore it. Today is gray, with clouds hanging low, and rain on and off. This is what we will have periodically from now through May. I'm ok with that. It makes me want to cook, and bake, and nest.
Chag Sameach to all of you reading who are observant in one way or another. It is my hope that those of you East of here are relieved of your heat soon and that the pleasure of fall and the wonderful colors and smells it brings are to follow shortly. And since much of the weather on the East Coast comes to you from out here in the West, I trust this will be happening toute-de-suite!
Today I'm cooking.

Happy New Year!
We had a VERY leisurely morning here if you count making kugel, feeding your children and cleaning a kitchen "leisurely". But it was done on my own time, with nowhere to be (once i made the decision NOT to go to Shul). I feel only a little guilty for skipping services today as I had the opportunity to go ON MY OWN to the grown up service without children attached to me. I thought I really would enjoy going but then I really enjoyed staying home and, right now, I thought that was more important.
My mom is in from the East Coast visiting which is SO nice and the girlies are thrilled (as am I) to have her.
We're going shopping today for two certain little girl birthdays. :-)
Shana Tova to you and yours and may you be inscribed in the Book of Life!

Not what I imagined
And then I realized something.
I still have my children.
So this three day weekend was not all it was cracked up to be, nor did I relax as much (or at all) as I wanted to. Nor did my brain get some relief.
This is a fact - once you are a parent of young children, there IS NO relaxing.
So in some small sick way, I look forward to heading back to work. It's somewhat more predictable. Sorta.
How about you guys? Anything good this weekend? Movies? Beach? Relaxation?
This weekend I head to the beach with one of my very dearest friends and 80-something other women I barely know for a women's retreat. I am hoping that at least THAT proves to be somewhat relaxing. Not restful, mind you, I'm not that dumb, but relaxing would be splendid. Because, dammit, I deserve it.

Bourdain and Ruhlman
Much of the show wasn't so much about the heart-attack-on-a-plate food, but about the characters in this particular episode of the show. The comic book writer with his arm in a sling, the crazy dude with the colorful jacket, the Great Lake surfer dude who was so cold he couldn't talk - they were perfect additions to the general comraderie and ball busting between Ruhlman and Bourdain.
But that ball busting was the best part. It's the way friends are with each other, especially good friends. Torture and relentless pestering that hides the true lovely nature of a great friendship.
It made me want to be at that table with them. More than that, it made me want to be at MY OWN table with my friends. The friends who endlessly pick on me, torture me about events long since "forgotten", the friends who know how to make me laugh so that the fingers on my hands can't wipe away the tears of laughter. It's a good thing I have these friends in my life. It's good for my health. I just don't get to sit with them often enough.
Anyway, it was a fun show to watch. Thanks to DG who referred me to that station in time to watch it. And DG...I can't wait to have you at my table some time soon. Or better yet, me at YOUR table since you're the fancy chef these days!
You're up early!

Oh...and....
Can we all sigh a collective sigh of relief?
Yeeeeesss....that's better, isn't it?
:-)
My Space...is not on My Space
The whole My Space experience feels awkward to me. I have to admit that I approach My Space with the same fear and slight disgust that I approach a stinky diaper. I'm just not sure what's going to happen and just the act of signing in to My Space makes me fear for my email address and the CRAP that will end up in my inbox.
Nevertheless, with my signing in, I have thus created my own space on My Space which is literally devoid of any information about me other than my first name. I don't need My Space friends. I don't get to see my REAL space friends so much anymore. My sole purpose of being there is to see her and read about all the cool things she's doing at home and on the road. It's completely worth it.
If you DARE to visit, you should. But better than that is to just go to her web page.

Like A Trucker...
That's how my dog sounds when she sleeps.
So feminine. So lovely.
And sometimes the snores come with the vapors.
Don't you wish you were me? :-)
Oh The Times...They Are a-Changin'
When I would savor my coffee.
When I could pee when I needed to.
When email was fun to read.
When I could whistle freely.
When I could listen to music on my PC.
When I could wear flip-flops in summer.
When I didn't have to think so damn hard about what to wear.
Those days are over.
My coffee is lukewarm by the time I get to it.
I go all day without time to pee.
My email keeps coming no matter how often or how quickly I get to it.
I can't whistle for fear of upsetting my office mate.
I have no speakers on my PC.
I'm wearing heels in summer.
And what to wear is something I start worrying about the evening before I have to put it on.
Yes indeed. The life of a working woman.
Now most of you will read this and think of how depressing it is, but really, it's not all bad. I LIKE working. I LIKE what I'm doing. I LIKE where I'm working. And while it's such a major change from the life I led for the past 5 years, it's kind of nice to exercise my brain.
My biggest complaint is VOLUME. The volume of work I have to do is overwhelming. It's hard to know what to do first and how to prioritize. I like to try and THINK about how to do things before having to do them. That is not a luxury I have much of right now. I'll have to adjust how I go about things and what I can rightfully expect for myself.
The worst part about all of this? I miss my friends. I am T-I-R-E-D when I get home and then to make dinner and deal with kids? It's about all I can do to veg out (or blog like tonight) at the end of the day, leaving weekends to painfully run errands which is torture. Yeah yeah I know some of you have been doing that forever. I don't care. I don't have to like it. I'd rather drink coffee, see friends, let the kids play and relax on my weekends.
So, uh, I was in a show a couple of weeks ago. That went well I guess. I got to sing which made me happy. I hope I get a chance to do that again soon. Rehearsals were painful for my family but it was brief in the scheme of things and I was on stage and it felt good. There's just no better place on earth sometimes. But I didn't love the show and I wasn't invested like I normally get and it was sometimes hard to focus. A little scary being on stage and realizing that you've not been paying attention. I don't think I'd like to do that again. But sing? Be onstage? Be in a show? SIGN ME UP!! My most sincere thanks for the handful of you that came to see it. I VERY much appreciated that effort.
What's everyone else been up to? My friend Janice went to China and sent AWESOME photos for me to see. Anyone else doing anything exciting? SHARE!

R.I.P. DinerGirl
She's taking a sabbatical since some other amazing opportunities have come her way and she needs to FOCUS man!
Thank the good Guy or Gal above that she's still cooking through the French Laundry Cookbook.
If you're reading my blog and you haven't checked out that blog about her experiences with Thomas Keller's French Laundry cookbook then you're nuts. GO THERE NOW.
You can thank me later.

Dos Toyotas
Swei Toyotan-schluggen
Shtayim Toyotot
However, you say it and in whatever language, even those that are made up, my honey and I are in possession of two new Toyota vehicles.
1. A Sienna.
2. A Camry Hybrid.
I feel I must address at LEAST the Sienna because, after all, we did bite the middle-aged bullet and buy a MINIVAN (which, of course, I swore I would NEVER do. How uncool!). But that thing ROCKS and has made my life oh-so-convenient. Both children can climb into the car on their own. Do I really need them to? Well, the Peanut, yes, she needs to get in without me lifting her now. The Bird still needs help getting into her seat but the fact that she climbs into the car on her own is quite helpful.
I have more mixed media in this car than I do at home. Radio, CD Player, Navigation System, DVD Player, XM Satellite Radio, and an auxilliary port for my iPod. Dude, there's no way to ever be bored with what you're hearing.
The Peanut and I really miss the old Jeep. We're sentimental. But the Sienna with it's roominess, smooth ride, media center, automatic doors, etc etc...Well, it really blows that Jeep right out of the water.
And today we picked up the Camry Hybrid which is sooooooo cooooool. Quiet as can be. Most of the same media features except without the DVD player, roomy inside and gets 50 MPG. Can you dig? We traded in a Ford F150 truck for that hybrid. We went from getting 12 MPG to 50MPG. G-d bless America! Or, you know, Japan.

Dat You?
I so suck for neglecting you all.
It's not on purpose though. My life has changed dramatically since my last posting.
Yes, I started to work again.
Full time and everything.
And yes, I only just started on Monday this week so why the long pause since the last posting?
Well, I had to get ready. Mentally, physically, wardrobe-y. It's been tricky to figure out how to dress these hips since they haven't had to wear a skirt in a looooong time. And my legs? I forced them to see the light of day. And my ankles? They suck.
But that's neither here nor there.
The point is, I started. There is SO much work to do and I will never catch up so I'm doing my best to hit the ground running and keep my head above water and not sink and not speak in cliches either.
I plan to really enjoy this job and stay as long as they'll have me. I hope that's a long time. At least until the Bird is done with 8th grade. ;-)
No seriously...good job. Good people. Good community. People are happy to see me. I am happy to see them. Not in a looooooooong time have I felt that way about work. So, whew!
And thankfully, since I am not the Diner Girl, and I do not take photos of gnarly things and show them to you on this blog, you will be spared the "mise en place" of my feet preparing to into my new shoes. It ain't pretty people. I need Dr. Kay to give me "pretty feet". Was that in DC or NY? Can someone remind me?
Love you all. How's the summer going?

Lottie's gone
Lottie Mendelson, mother of my very dear friend Michelle, passed away yesterday morning after a lengthy battle with leukemia. These last three and a half years or so have been nothing short of a nightmarish rollercoaster in which my friend watched her mother deteriorate from this evil, horrible disease. Periods of true hope and tentative happiness were followed by what seemed to be the inevitable bad news. The battle was nearly won and lost several times during this time with the drama playing out to its end yesterday morning.
Lottie was a great lady. Warm, funny, caring, welcoming and was always happy to see you. She remembered conversations past and always followed up on how things were after you last spoke with her. She made me feel welcome, always, in the relatively short time that I knew her. And she will be missed.
So I am here wondering what to do for Michelle. She is surrounded by family and those who have known her and her mom her whole life, thank goodness and so is supported by many people right now, including us, of course. But I am feeling fidgety, like I should be doing more somehow. I know I will have the opportunity to do so later this week so maybe I should just get started making some food and freezing it. That way when she's ready, I am too and I'm able to make some use of myself.
Anyone know of any web sites that post recipes for casseroles or any other appropriate "shiva" foods?

July 4th - A Celebration
We had a quiet day. We car shopped a little, we BBQ'd here, drank some sangria I made which was really GREAT, watched fireworks on TV and out my window and went to sleep at a decent hour.
Most people I spoke with had a really quiet 4th this year. Maybe the fact that it was on a Wednesday made a difference. I think probably so.
Regardless, I hope you got to take a little time off to refresh yourself a bit. Taking a break is a really good thing.
Enjoy the weekend!

Violet Beauregard
All because she stole the candy that helped her taste all of Thanksgiving dinner, including the blueberry pie.
I am also turning violet because I cannot eat enough blueberries. They are soooooo good, and huge and juicy right now. Costco sells them in 2 lb tubs here and I am FLYING through them.
I guess it's better than stealing candy not yet ready for consumption.
Roll me outta here...
Insomniaaaarrrggghhh
But THE SHARK is in town. My father whom I cherish is visiting from "the city". New York City, of course. Like you didn't know...
AND I got a job offer which is wonderful and a great opportunity.
AND I am not thrilled with some of the content for the show I'm in.
Lots on my mind. Going back to work takes me away from my small delicious children and that makes me sad. But having this job means we're all in the same building all day and so maybe I'll be able to visit? Perhaps I'll appreciate the time I will have with them THAT MUCH MORE since it'll be so preciously few hours in a week.
The show I'm in is turning out to be a little morose and sad. But GREAT singing opportunities for me, so I appreciate it. Even if it's not my favorite. And my kid can't see it. Boo hoo. :-(
OK, it's 2:11AM. I have to at least return and TRY to sleep a little. My day starts in a little less than 4 hours. That's about how much sleep I got last night too.
Ach...a sign of things to come? Or a temporary situation? You be the judge.

A Musical Review, etc.
Aug. 8,9, and 12 at the MJCC here in Portland. This means that the three of you locals reading this will come (maybe) and the rest of you won't be able to make it.
Alas...it's an interesting piece. I haven't seen the script yet but suffice it to say it's filled with all sorts of Civil Rights scenes and anti-War sentiments. For me, personally, it's a chance to SING MY HEART OUT. I am lucky to have THREE amazing solo opportunities and I cannot wait to sing them. I hope I can do them justice.
Solo 1: I have to summon my inner black woman. We all know she's there. Now I'll get to show her off.
Solo 2: Vashti returns. A little brash, a little raunch, a lotta chesty, low singing. Really fun.
Solo 3: Sweet, more conservative, careful and really pretty. I hope I have voice left with which to sing it all.
Of course, tonight, I almost missed my entire rehearsal. SO much going on in my brain. Now with school out I have to get back to organizing three lives in a day. I'm trying to stay afloat and SANE. I'm in no way unique in this. Everyone I know is looking to their friends as if to say, "What are YOU doing later??" Getting the kids together gives us all a bit of an easier time.
If we were on the East Coast, we'd be counting down the days until sleepaway camp and determining when the right age is to send them. Here that's a one week thing. There it's 8 weeks. 8 WEEKS. My kids are going. I'll need a second mortgage on the house, but they're going. Someday.
In the meantime, we'll survive, play a lot and see some friends. Sounds like summer!

Is it possible?
Is it possible that I'm allergic to all the things he said I wasn't allergic to??
I find that each day is a mystery. I cough, I rub my eyes, my throat hurts on one side every other day or so. It never progresses. Yet, I hack up my lungs each morning, rub my eyes on occasion so that I'm GA-RON-TEED to look 60 when I'm 40, and want to rip out my throat every now and again because it hurts.
Sounds like allergies to me, jerky treat.
Today I will buy some Claratin and see how I do.
I will report back on what I can only assume will be my success.

Blog, dammit!
I knew YOU were going to say it, so I said it for you.
So, anyone else out there just getting a dearth of friend's bad news?? Hmm???
I am seriously afraid to answer my phone. I literally cringe with each playful ring of my phone. And these are important calls to take! And I LOVE my friends. They are important to me and I want to DO things for them. So when I can't, I feel like I'm letting them down in some way. I realize that this is my OWN problem, of course. I'll get over it, help as much as I can, support as much as I can and that's about all I can do. But it does seem to me that this will be a very difficult summer indeed.
So? Travel plans anyone? Anyone doing anything exciting? Beach getaways? Family car trips? Let's hear your good news! I could use it.
Day camp starts tomorrow for the Peanut and her friends. It'll either be a great summer or I'm going to have to resort to making extensive summer plans with the kids. This is the third summer of day camp. She's either going to like it or not but I'm not going to sign her up again if she doesn't enjoy her summer...again.
The Bird has NO summer plans other than playing around with her peers and their mommies as we wait for their big siblings to get out of daycamp. Seems unfair, it's true, but this is life for the second in line. We'll find some fun, spalsh around, try to keep the TV off and pray it doesn't get too toasty.
Off to buy some bagels. We have some decent bagels now in town. Thankfully made by Jeff Wang and his partners at Kettleman Bagels. He used to make bagels on Long Island! Leave it to me to find the home boy out here in the PACNW. No more rolls with holes for me.
See ya real soon!
